Speaking after the hearing in the European Parliament for Mrs Viviane Reding the Commissioner-Designate for Justice and Fundamental Rights, Diana Wallis MEP said,
"Mrs Reding has put together, both in her written replies and her presentation at the hearing, an impressive patch work of items and initiatives over the whole area of her competence. What I was trying to test is whether or not she has a coherent vision of how the whole European civil justice system will work and more importantly how we will make it both explicable and accessible to all Europe's citizens. Making sense out of 27 sets of national applicable laws, alongside a possible 28th optional regime, combined with an increasing number of national opt-outs and intended areas of enhanced co-operation, does not in my view make for accessible European justice
"However, Mrs Reding's overall performance was very professional and persuasive; there can be no doubting her European commitment and experience. Likewise her journalism background and communication skills will bring some much needed focus and attention to this the area of civil justice"
