Reacting to William Hague's comments that the Conservatives would never support Euro membership for the UK, the local Liberal Democrat Euro MP, Diana Wallis, said:
"It is ridiculous for the Tories to say never. The decision for the UK to join the Euro or not must be based on what is best for Britain not on petty prejudices and emotion. The New Year should be an opportunity to have a sensible debate about the virtues or otherwise of the UK's Euro membership - frankly most people in the UK still remain in the dark.
"The Liberal Democrats see membership of the Euro as a longer term possibility after a nationwide referendum; certainly not an option to be ruled out before informed debate, more especially at a time when the Euro is rising in value and continually attracting new members."
